Allen Family and Descendants of Latimerstown, Wexford, Ireland [1663-1900 ] -
Notes for Ebenezer "Eben" Nunn ALLEN:
Eben probably immigrated to Maryland, United States about the same time as his brothers in the 1790s. A record at the Maryland State Archives indicates that he became a Justice of the Peace 22 July 1831, so he may have been a lawyer as well. He is buried in the same row as his brother William, and as we will see from his will, he remained close to William's children until the end of his days. His tombstone inscription reads "Sacred to the memory of Ebenezer Nun Allen who died Nov 23, 1840, age 63." A scripture is illegible. Another source indicates that Eben was 61 when he died, so from these sources we can infer he was born between 1777 and 1779.
Eben's 1840 will was illegible in parts, but this much may be gleaned: he first freed all his slaves after they reached the age of 21; he left bequests of $1000. each to to Adeline Allen? of John? and Elizabeth ? of Rick?; to his sister Mary ? he left $1000.; to his brother William he left $1500.; to his sister Hannah Nun he left $500. and then to his brother William he left an additional $500. and to his sister-in-law Hannah Allen he also $500.
In addition, he said that "my dear wife will receive a proportion by law of my estate" but neither her name nor the amount was specified.
Stephen A. Pearne? and Robert Bolton (who had married his niece (Margaret "Peggy" Bond Allen) also received $100. each and he named his brother William executer. Perhaps in a codicil, Eben added that if
William of Glanvill? (his niece Ann Maria's son?) died before he reached the age of majority and without issue, everything was to go to William Allen's children, Sarah and Mary Allen (who were also his nieces of course.) (Source: Harford Co. Wills, 1831-1842, WK 827-28, available at Maryland State Archives)
Although I am not absolutely sure of everybody's identity in this will, except in those cases where he specified a relationship, I have inferred that Eben had no children of his own, even though he may have
been married for possibly a fourth time, since both Elicia (Monks) and Elizabeth (Chauncy) are identified on their separate tombstones as "the wife of Eben. N. Allen" and are buried beside each other in St.
George's Cemetery (Spesutia) in Perryman, Maryland. This is the cemetery where his brother Rev. John was also interred, so perhaps Eben lived near him when he first came to Maryland.
However, notes in the Dielman-Hayman File at the Maryland Historical Society in Baltimore indicate that the Ebenezer N. Allen who died at his residence in Abington, age 61 years on 30 Nov 1840 married Alicia
(sic) Malvina Monks Nov. 23, 1821 and Mary Ann Billigslea, daughter of James, 4 Dec 1823. No mention was made of Elizabeth Chauncey, making it possible that she was the wife of his nephew, Ebenezer Nun Allen, born 1803, although I believe this is unlikely, considering the proximity of her grave to Elicia's.
