Earl started his career working in a shoe factory on wooden heels. His wife, Elizabeth, also worked in the same shoe factory. By 1920 Earl was a foreman in that factory in Haverhill, MA and by 1930 he manufactured his own wooden heels in Seabrook, NH. Some time later he sold his shoe factory and purchased the Rockingham Hotel in Salem, NH.
