DURWARD KECK 1915-2004 OAKWOOD — Durward C. Keck, 89, of Oakwood, died at 2:05 p.m. Friday, March 19, at Putnam Acres Care Center in Ottawa. He was born March 17, 1915, in Melrose, the son of Clyde and Elsie (Switzer) Keck. On March 14, 1942, he married Donelda Workman, who survives. He graduated from Oakwood High School in 1932, where he was a member of Oakwood High School’s first football team, a star basketball player, and an outstanding baseball pitcher. He coached his sons in little league and pony league baseball. He retired from farming in Leipsic in 1981. He then moved back to his home farm located south of Melrose. He was a member of the Melrose United Methodist Church and he was active in the Leipsic Methodist Church, a 4-H leader for many years, a former Kiwanis member, and a former Brown Township trustee. Also surviving are two sons, Dannie (Darlin) Keck of Marion, Iowa and Gary (Marty) Keck of Leipsic; five grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Preceding him in death was a sister, Elsie Mae. Services were held Tuesday, March 30, at Heitmeyer Funeral Home in Oakwood, with the Rev. Bob Parker officiating. Burial was in the Sherman Cemetery in Oakwood. Preferred memorials are to the Melrose United Methodist Church. |
