VII. JOHN SEMPLE, fourth lord of Eliotstoun, was a man of great parts, and employed in several negotiations of state, which he managed with dexterity and honour.
In a charter of Robert Duke of Albany, governor of Scotland, to Dougal MacDougal, of the lands of Yester, John Semple, lord of Eliotstoun, is a witness, anno 1409.
He was one of the Scotch commissioners, appointed to treat with the English in 1421, was very active in negotiating the liberty of King James I. and waited upon his majesty at Durham, when he was returning home.
He died before the year 1440, leaving issue a son,
VIII. Sir ROBERT SEMPLE
