Douglas was brought up by his sister Gertrude May after their mother Laura died of cancer. When Vida was 11 she went to stay with Uncle Doug and Lois and their twin boys aged 7 (Derek and Errol) at Gamma Pedie, 28 miles from Kuruman. She was there for 9 months for health reasons and used to take long walks in the bush.

First given name also spelt Douglass.
