Dorothy Stern was born in the United States on October 24, 1932. Although born healthy, she became seriously ill at age 6 months, and sustained severe brain damage, the extent of which did not become apparent until age 4. She developed stabismus in her left eye, and was largely nonverbal, able to communicate by pointing and uttering nonverbal sounds. At age 4, she was sent off to live at Letchworth Village, a home in New York State for the mentally retarded and developmentally disabled, in 1936. She lived at Letchworth until she was transferred to Rome Developmental Center (Rome, NY) in 1944. She lived there until she was transferred again to Wilton Developmental Center (NY) in 1982. She was then transferred again to Lexington Center' Black Street residence (Gloversville, NY) in 1988, where she lived until she passed away. Dorothy never attended school, was never able to speak and though she largely never knew her family, she was well loved by her housemates as well as the staff at the Residence where she had lived until her death. She was known affectionately as 'The Queen of Black Street', known for her love for pretty jewelry and having her hair and nails done. Given her circumstances, those who knew her well would say she lived a good and meaningful life.
