Dorothy Smith Plauche, 83, died Sunday, May 5, 2002, in a local hospital.

A native of El Paso, Texas, she grew up in Houston. She received a bachelor's in home economics from Texas Women's University in Denton, then got a master's in environmental science from McNeese. She moved to Lake Charles in 1939 and taught atLaGrange High, S.P. Arnett Middle, Westlake High and Immaculate ConceptionCathedral School. She was the first sponsor of the Gatorettes dance line at LaGrange. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Cathedral. She was a founding member ofthe Lake Charles Ballet Society and Lake Charles Junior Cotillion .She was Sustainer of the Year for the Junior League of Lake Charles in the early 1990s. She was a member of the Junior League committee that formed the Lake Charles Symphony. Shewas a primary advocate for the construction of Pearl Watson Junior High. She was on the board of the Samaritan Counseling Center. The Children's Museum's Dorothy Plauche Volunteerism Award was instituted after her service on the museum board. Shewas a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Alpha Delta Pi sorority, Planters League, L'heure du Livre book cluband the Association of Southwest Louisiana Home Economists.

Survivors include five children, Anne Plauche Marks of Baton Rouge, Marie Plauche Gustin of Houston, Charles Stephen Plauche of Natchez, Miss, and John Treanor Plauche and James W. Plauche, both of Baton Rouge; two brothers, John T. Smith andCharles L. Smith, both of Houston; 14 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, at Immaculate Conception Cathedral. Monsignor Jace Eskind will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home. Visitation at the funeral home is 4-8 p.m.today, with a rosary at 6 p.m., and 11:30a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday.
