Doris E. Christiana COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Doris E. Christiana, 84, of Fernleigh Drive in Cooperstown, died Sunday evening, March 28, 1999, at her home.

She was born on March 9, 1915, in Plattsburgh, a daughter of George and Edith (Walsh) Weir.


She first married Edward R. Rawls on June 18, 1943, in New York City. Mr. Rawls died on Feb. 12, 1963. She then married William G. Christiana on April 3, 1982, in Cooperstown. Mr. Christiana died on March 3, 1991.


Mrs. Christiana was raised in Plattsburgh, graduating from high school there in 1933. In 1937, she received a bachelor of literary interpretation degree from Emerson College. She later attended Columbia University, where she did her post graduate work. While living in New York City she worked as a copywriter. She later lived in Mount Vision and Morris. In the early 1960s she moved to Cooperstown and in 1967, she opened The Little Red Shop on Hoffman Lane with Mrs. John Logan.


She was a very active and devoted member of the Lake and Valley Garden Club and was also a member of the Leatherstocking Golf Club, Cooperstown Country Club, Friends of Bassett and the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown. An avid traveler, she had toured extensively throughout the world. In recent years she spent the winter months in Florida and St. Martins, as well as St. Simons Island.


Mrs. Christiana will be missed by her many friends and relatives.


Doris is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Marion B. and Charles Currier of Wellesley Hills, Mass.


A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 2, 1999, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Stephen J. Quinlan, co-pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Lakewood Cemetery.


At the request of the family there will be no calling hours.


In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to Friends of Bassett, 1 Atwell Rd., Cooperstown, New York 13326; or the Lake and Valley Garden Club Tribute Fund, Cooperstown, New York 13326.


Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
