Donald Montgomery Jr., 72

1936-2009

Donald Francis Montgomery Jr., 72, of Monona, Iowa, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at Gunderson Lutheran Hospital, LaCrosse, Wis., following a long illness.

Mass of Christian Burial was said at 11 am Saturday, April 18, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Monona. The Very Rev. Richard Gaul was celebrant.

Inurnment will take place in St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery, Monona, at a later date.

Visitation was held from 4 to 7 pm on Friday, April 17, at the Leonard Funeral Home, Monona, with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 4 pm. Visitation was also held one hour before mass time at the church on Saturday.

Honorary bearers were Julie and Wes Heying, Betty and Cal Foels, Tony and Beck Niel.

Music for the funeral was by Joshua Grau, organist, and Jennifer Feudner, soloist.

Don was born on July 26, 1936, in Monona, to Donald and Anna Catherine (Lechnir) Montgomery Sr. He attended St. Patrick Catholic School, Monona, through the eighth grade and graduated from Monona High School in 1954.

Don was united in marriage to Alice Davis on Dec. 31, 1961, at St. Mary Catholic Church, McGregor, Iowa. They were the proud parents of three children. Don worked at Peglow Motors in Monona and was a lineman for Hinkels and McCoy. He also worked for Clayton County as a maintainer for over 32 years.

Don was a lifetime member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Monona, where he served on the parish council and taught CCD. He joined the Knights of Columbus in 1982 and served as Grand Knight of Council #8178, District Deputy for three years and was a 4th degree Knight for 23 years.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Montgomery, Monona; three children, Linda Barnett, Parsons, Tenn., John (Sara) Montgomery, Florida, and Don (Amy) Montgomery, Elkader; seven grandchildren, Lacy, Anna, Whitley, Collin, Alex, Mattie and Corbin; brothers and sisters Shirley (Fritz) Meyer, Monona, Thomas Montgomery, Augusta, Ga., Marilyn Thompson, Soldiers Grove, Wis., Norma (Dick) Asleson, Monona, and Jym Montgomery, Monona.

Don was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Clarence Thompson.
