When Dillard was 20, he was sentenced to two years in the state penitentiary for "malicious stabbing." He served from December 22, 1841 until December 22, 1843. Conduct was "fair." He was married at the time. (Records of the State Penitentiary)

Dillard joined the Union Baptist Church of Christ on Cosby Highway in 1849. Church minutes note that he "was in a fight with Jesse C. Holoway."

Oral family history says that he was "killed by Rebels" on August 21, 1864, during the Civil War.
