CHOPIN. !CENSUS-RESIDENCE-EDUCATION: 1880 LA, St. Mary Parish, on 24 JUN, in E.D. 173, Pg. 49, the 6th Wards, dwelling 459, family 475; white, male, 5 years old, son, at house, no disability, blank for attended school, cannot read 1, cannot write 1 (both crossed out--did not apply if under age 10), born St. Mary Parish, LA, father born in LA, mother born in LA. !MILITARY: Military File, Spanish War; National Archives, Textual Reference Branch; Service Cards, Medical Cards, and internal memo. Desire A. THERIOT [listed as just Desire, and just Desire Austin on some medical reports], Sergeant in Company C, 1st Louisiana Infantry. He volunteered at New Iberia, LA on 1 May 1898 for two years, for the war with Spain. [Usual requirements for enlistees was that they be single, between 18 and 35, and able to speak English.] He was mustered-in at New Orleans on 10 May 1898, on a roll dated 31 May 1898. His personal description was age 23 years, height 5 feet, 8 3/4 inches; complexion sallow; eyes blue; hair L.Br. He was born in Leanville [sic], LA, was single; his occupation "Machinist." [Is this why he was inducted as a Sergeant?] The parent or guardian named was Mrs. D. L. BROUSSARD, New Iberia, LA. He signed the roll. Desire was present on the muster rolls for May & Jun 1898, except for transfer of duty to Division Hospital on 14 Jun; back to duty 15 Jun 1898 (measles "in line of duty" was the cause in parentheses). He was hospitalized again on 24 [sic, should be 23 Aug as on medical card] Aug 1898, back to duty on 25 Aug 1898. He was also listed "Sick in Q[uarte]rs on 16 Sep, back to duty 17 Sep 1898, both "in line of duty." He was mustered-out at Jacksonville, FL on 3 Oct 1898, last paid by Major HALLOWAY to 31 Aug 1898; still due $23.862 cts. There are also four medical cards showing his illnesses. Desire Austin THERIOT married Frances N. MEGUET [sic], record dated 18 Apr 1901, in Book 24, Folio 165, page 58, Record Book for 1901, at St. Mary Parish, LA. !RESIDENCES: He lived in Franklin with the MEQUETs. !SOCIAL SECURITY: Copy in possession of Karen Theriot Reader. His first Application for Social Security Account Number (Form SS-5) was signed in [?] 1953. Desire A. Theriot had mailing address of P. O. Box 4, Franklin, LA. He gave his date of birth June 1, 1875 [another year is crossed out], place of birth Lowryville [?], Iberia, LA, age 77 [sic] at last birthday. His parents were Aus[ene?] D.
