    Denise K. Grether
    Denise K. Grether was born on Feb. 27, 1951 in Wichita, Kansas to Gene and Menzenita Stephens. Her early years were spent in the Howard area where she attended Howard schools and made many friends. In 1961 her family moved to Wichita where she completed her education and went on to college. Denise was a student at Wichita State University from 1966 to 1969. She was married on Jan. 31 in Wichita, Kansas to Michael Grether and had lived in Colorado Spring, CO since 1976. At the time of her death she was employed as a receptionist at the Laurel Manor Nursing Home in Colorado Springs.
    On Dec. 3, 1978 she died at a local hospital in Colorado Springs at the age of 27. Denise was a member of the United Methodist Church. This poem was written by her a short time before her death.

    Denied the warmth of sunlight, trapped behind the moon.
    Sentenced to a long night, inside a still cocoon.
    Let your thoughts fly to me. Hear my voice inside your heart;
    "Our minds will always be free, We can't be kept apart."

    Her survivors include her husband, Michael Grether of Colorado Springs, So; a son Adam F. Steven of Wichita, KS; her parents, Gene D. and Menzenita Stephens of Wichita, KS; a grandfather, Hershel L Stephens of Howard, KS; a sister, Cassandra D. Wineinger of Mesa, AZ; and two brothers, Dan Stephens of Wichita, KS and Craig Cole of Branson, MO.
    The funeral services were held in Colorado Springs at 2:00 p.m., Monday Dec. 4, 1978 at the Evergreen Funeral Home with Rev. James Crowell Officiating. The graveside services and interment were held at the Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard, KS at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 6, 1978 with the Rev. John Evans of the Howard United Methodist Church officiating. The casket bearers were Bill Redmond, John Batson, Glen Jontra, Glen Miller, Charles Ritz and Dennis Crisp. A memorial has been established in her name and memory with the Kansas Lung Association and may be made at the Zimmerman Funeral Home.
