    His father Jeremiah Cherry and wife, Mary married in Norfolk County, Virginia, but by 1790 were back in Martin County, North Carolina where both were born. It is here all children born slightly before and after that date were born, and thus where Dempsey was most likely born. The Cherry family moved to Maury County, Tennessee by 1808 where Jeremiah opened an inn.
