[I assume the basis for Deborah's maiden name, which is given as Prince on this Wereleate page, is from this source I am citing, where Thomas Prince (in Gloucester court) refers to brother in law Thomas Skillings. However, I will point out that several sources say that the wife of Thomas Prince is Margaret Skillings, which if true, would explain the brother-in-law reference. I don't know the basis for the Margaret Skillings assertion, but as it is made by knowledgeable people (e.g., Thomas Henley), it weakens the hypothesis that Prince was Deborah's maiden name. Admittedly, it is not uncommon for multiple pairs of siblings of two families to intermarry, but the chronology casts some doubt on this possibility. Thomas Prince probably married before coming to New England in 1649 whereas Thomas Skillings apparently married 1642 after coming to New England, but before Thomas Prince came to New England. So it makes it unlikely that the Deborah in Salem that Thomas Skilling married would be related to Thomas Prince. Hence the proposal of Prince as a maiden name for Deborah is doubtful, unless additional evidence is found.]

24 Jun 1692 Deborah Hadley deposed that she was 70 years old.

  3. Gloucester, MA was founded as a fishing camp in 1623 and could not be the birth place of Deborah.
  4. In a blurb on his book, Thomas Skillin of Falmouth (now Portland), Maine and his Descendants, at [1], Tom Henley says, "His wife Deborah died in Ipswich following a depose at the witch trials." A superstitious person could find this eery, except that she was 70.
