This note is by research Carl Fletcher Lamar-"when David was 2yr old in 1812, the Adam Winkler family moved to Ohio Co Ky which in 1815 was divided into Ohio Co [south part] & Daviess Co [north part]. The Adam Winkler family was apparently charter citizens of Daviess co. Records show David Francis Winkler & Frances Adams were marr in Daviess Co at ages of 18 & 19. The Winkler homestead as I knew it in the 1920's was built of logs that were most likely cut fr the site. When I first knew the place someone had covered the logs with regular wood siding. Assuming this was the original structure, it stood well over 100yr bef it was torn down to make way for a modern building. I believe the FON SMEATHERS family was the last of the Winkler clan [Ellen Pearl Winkler Smeathers] to live in the old homestead where she & Fon were married. Daughter Margaret Phyllis Smeathers Spicer says she did not know the basic building was of logs. David Francis Winkler must have been a physically strong man & possessed of a strong will to match. I hope you will pardon me if I indulge in a bit of conjecture. I can visualize my ggrandfather as he felled trees, shaped timbers, fitted them into place for a residence, made other structures for farm purposes, fences, etc and yes, there was a well to be dug. No mention was made of Indians in family stories, but it is likely that David worked with a rifle close at hand. Compared with his contemporaries, David's life span of 85yrs was truly remarkable. Not many men of his time lived to be 70. Frances Adams was an excellent choice as a pioneer wife. Family stories tell us she came fr a family that settled in America in 1636-the same Adams family that later gave this country 2 presidents, John & John Quincy Adams. Their children: Susannah, Elizabeth Jane 1834-1912, Jas Francis 1836-1909, David F 1838-1878, Missouri A, John H, Minor 1847-1917, Felix Taylor 1850-1878. Frances Adams Winkler was b Nov 4 1809 and d Apr 11 1879 & is buried at Mt Zion Cem Daviess Co Ky."

NOTE: this is written in the journal of Ellen Pearl Winkler Smeathers "David Francis Winkler married Frances Adams", "Francis Adams was born November 4 1809"; Frances Adams Winkler died April 11 1879; "She was a descendant of President John Adams 1735-1826, whose ggrandfather Henry Adams came to America fr Devonshire England in 1636."
