The son of Henry & Mary (Bixler) Stouffer, in 1860 he was living with his prosperous farming family in Greene Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. By 1865, he stood 5' 9" tall and had black hair and brown eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated of twenty-three in Chambersburg March 7, 1865, mustered into federal service there March 15 as a private with the 103rd Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. A, and honorably discharged with his company June 25, 1865. It is possible that he enlisted and initially mustered as an unassigned private with the 87th Pennsylvania Infantry and transferred to the 101st, although this is unconfirmed.
He married Mary Bixler ca. 1868 and fathered Alta Melissa (b. @1868), Laura May (b. 08/30/70), and George Bixler (b. 02/17/78). Cause of his death is listed as "hepatic cirrhosis." No obituary was found in any online newspaper archive, and his death certificate uses his wife's name as his mother's identification.
