    WILLIAM, DAVID, REUBEN and MARTHA SMITH, all of whom lived in Acworth, were of the third
    generation in this country. David Smith, their grandfather, came from Ireland to Londonderry
    and afterwards settled in New Boston. He and one of his neighbors were once attacked by seven
    Indians, the neighbor was soon wounded and three of the Indians proceeded to bind him, while
    the remaining four fell upon Smith, who bravely defended himself, and nearly killed one of
    the savages by striking him with a gun which he had wrenched from his hands. He was speedily
    overcome and bound, and loading him with their plunder they started for Canada. He, however,
    liberated himself and his companion during the first night and escaped. He was the father of
    nineteen children by two wives, of whom David was the father of those who settled in Acworth.

    In Hillsboro', April 4, David Smith, in the 90 year of his age. The deceased had been a professor of religion and a member of the Baptist church for the last fifty years of his life.
