David Lewis went by the name of "Lewis". Lewis moved about 1811, with his parents to Chenango County., NY. He resided alone in 1850, in Newstead Twp., Erie County, NY, near the home of his parents in Newstead. In 1860 and 1870, Lewis and his family resided in Pittsford Twp., Hillsdale County, Michigan. In the early 1870's this family moved to a farm east of Shultz, in Hope Township, Barry County. Lewis owned 80 acres on the south side of Shultz Road. David Lewis built a house back quite far from the road, near a spring.

The "Hastings Banner" of Dec 13, 1894, reported that "Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Smith have returned from an extended visit in Hillsdale. While returning home, Mr. Smith fell and broke his collar bone." The 1894 Hope Twp. Census states that Lewis was a retired farmer and that he was inform. It further informs us that his wife, Catherine, had had eight children, but only four were living.
