The region west of the Mississippi which includes what is now Delaware co Ia was opended to white settlers 1 June 1833 following a treaty at the close of the Blackhawk war. Prior to 1833 following a treaty at the close of the Blackhawk war. Prior to 1833 the only white men in the area were hunters and trappers from Julien Dubuque settlement at Dubuque which had been established in 1788 by special arrangements with the Indians. The first settlement in what is now Delaware Co was started by William Bennett and his wife, Elizabeth Eads, Bennett.in 1834. They built their cabin in what is now the southeastern part of Honey Ceek township. In 1838 william Eads, the father of Mrs Bennet, brought his family from Galena, Illinois and took over the Bennett location. The Bennetts moved west to a new location which is now Quasqueton (Eds Grove no longer exists.) It was approximately three miles south west of Greeley, Iowa james and Minnie Hutson farmed in this area until 1953. the other earliest settlers are listed as follows, 1836 the Henry Teegartner family near Colesburg, 1836-37 Lucious Kibbe, Hugh and James Livingstone and Hugh Rose also Nicholson family, 1837 Joel Bailey and Cyrus and John Keeler, 1837- 38, John Flinn, and Robert B Hutson among other names. The year 1839 brought a number of settlers, John Penn settled in the north part of Delhi twp, in what was laater known as Penns Grove and Jacob Schwartz, Roland Aubrey, and John Corbin on Plumb Creek, Eleazar Frentress and Robert B Hutson, Clark and Hingst families settled at Eads Grove, and Samuel Whittaker not far from Hopkinton. The Main, Blanchard, Roff ,and Green and Robinson families chose locations at Buck Creek. The earliest settlement in Delaware Co twp, was made by Robert B Hutson in the northeast corner in 1838-39. The first settlement in Delaware twp, was in Eads Grove region, that of Rober B Hutson, being the first. In 1840 Joel Pike located about a half mile west of Hutson and JW Martin was in the same neighborhood two years later. In 1840 the ill fated settlement of Paddlefords, and Rexfords, was made near the mouth of Honey Creek. Uri Blanchard who settled in sec 1 in 1846 married Robert B Hutsons daughter Martha Matilda, in 1854 In the year 1842 Robert B Hutson was appointed treasurer of Delaware Co He was the first treasurer of the county. It is said Samuel P Whittaker was the first settler. He built his cabin southwest of Hopkinton settlement in 1839. The exact date of the settlement of Buck Creek region seems to be in doubt. A number of families came about this time as is mentioned above, the Blanchard, Main Green families etc. Most settlers who came at that period were men of ability and character who were useful in founding the county.
