Facts and Events
[edit] About David KeyesDavid Wesley Keyes was born 6 September 1844 in Ontario Canada [1880 U.S. Census and Find-A-Grave], the son of James Keyes and Ellen Robinson. He was raised in the village of Kincardine, in Bruce County, Ontario, Canada. According to the 1900 U.S. Census records, David emigrated to the United States in 1865 at the end of the Civil War, likely living in New York, as three years later on 6 January 1868, New York Marriage records show that he married his first wife, Margaret Ann "Maggie" Forbes, in Manhattan. She was the daughter of William Forbes and Elizabeth Sloan of New York. David and his new wife moved back to Kincardine shortly thereafter as they are listed in the 1871 Census of Canada living there with their eldest son Thomas A. Keyes [tnen age 2]. They apparentyl stayed in Kincardine until perhaps 1878/1879 or so, as the family is listed in the 1880 U.S. Census as living in Cass County, Dakota Territory, which became the state of North Dakota in 1889. David and Maggie Forbes had at least five children together as shown in census and other records. David's family may have migrated for a short while to Chicago, Illinois, as that appears to be the location where his first wife Maggie died on 5 February 1890 [Source: Cook County, Illinois Death Index, 1878-1922]. Unfortunately, as the 1890 U.S. Census was destroyed by fire in 1921, it is not possible to show exactly where the family lived until David and his second wife Jennie Eakins, whom he had married in 1892, are listed in the 1900 U.S. Census in Chambus, Stutsman County, North Dakota. David was listed as Head of Household, age 55 and Jennie was listed as age 50 with no other household members living with them. It appears unlikely that David and his second wife Jennie Eakins had any children together. David Keyes stayed in North Dakota for the remainder of his life as he was listed with wife Jennie in the 1920 U.S. Census, then living in Pipestem, Stutsman County, North Dakota, until he passed away on 26 June 1926. He is buried in Wheatland Cemetery, Cass County, North Dakota, with his first wife Maggie (Forbes) Keyes and also his mother Ellen (Robinson) Keyes. They are all listed on different sides of David's grave monument, as shown in Find-A-Grave. Image Gallery
