About James Keyes
James Keyes, (some say his name was "James William Keyes"), was born abt. 1809* in County Tyrone, Ireland [according to family tradition]. James had brothers Cowen, Joseph, John and Tom of Tyrone County, Northern Ireland. The identity of their parents to date has not been proven. In abt. 1841, he married Ellen Robinson, the daughter of Thomas Robinson and Anna Lee of Mantilin, Fermanagh County, Northern Ireland. Prior to 1844, James and Ellen Keyes had migrated to Ontario, Canada and were listed in the 1851 Census of Canada in Nichol Township in Wellington County, Ontario, Canada with the family of his brother Joseph, and brothers John and Cowan.
A few years later, the family migrated to the nearby township of Kincardine, Bruce, Ontario, Canada and they appear to have had at least eight children born in Ontario, Canada as shown in the 1861 and 1871 Census of Canada, and other records. Information included in those census records shows that James Keyes' occupation was a Farmer, he was of Irish origin, was a Weslyan Methodist (Religion), and that he was unable to read or write according to the latter Census.
James Keyes died on 23 February 1882 in Bruce County, Ontario, Canada, as proven by Ontario, Canada death records, and was likely buried there. His wife Ellen (Robinson) Keyes migrated with some of their children to North Dakota where she lived until 1911. She was buried in Wheatland Cemetery, Cass County, North Dakota and is listed on one side of the gravestone monument of her eldest son David Wesley Keyes (1844-1926).
- James Keyes birthdate varies in records from between 1809-1811.
