About Thomas Arthur Keyes

Thomas Arthur Keyes was born 9 September 1868 in Kincardine Township, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada, the son of David Wesley Keyes (1844-1926) and his first wife Margaret Ann "Maggie" Forbes (1841-1890). Thomas Keyes married Frances Elizabeth "Fannie" Smith (1866-1940), daughter of William H. Smith (1840-bef. 1930) and Mary Ann Berry (1845-1931).

According to U.S. Census records, Thomas Keyes emigrated with his family to the United States sometime around 1872-1880 and was listed in the 1880 U.S. Census living in Cass County, then in Dakota Territory, which that area became the state of North Dakota in 1889. [Note: the southern portion of Dakota Territory became the state of South Dakota, also in 1889].

In 1900, Thomas married to Frances Elizabeth "Fanny" Smith, the daughter of William H. Smith (1840-bef. 1930) and Mary Ann Berry (1845-1931), emigrants from Germany and England, respectively. Thomas and Frances Keyes would have four children together: 1) Marjorie Lee Keyes (b. abt. 1902); 2) Milford L. Keyes, (1904-1943); 3) Dorothy Keyes (1906-1985); and 4) Melvin F. "Pete" Keyes (1910-1965). In the 1900 U.S. Census, Thomas Keys [Head of Household, age 29, born in Canada] was living in Page, Cass County, North Dakota with his wife Fanny [age 30, born in Iowa], working as a "Harness Maker". He stated that he had immigrated in 1872, had been in the United States for 28 years and was a naturalized citizen.

Thomas Keyes in the 1910 U.S. Census in Nelson County, North Dakota was then employed as a Livery working in a Stable. He was living with his wife Fanny [age 43], and children Margaret [age 8], Milford [age 5] and Dorothy [age 3]. He stated to the census taker that he was born in "Canada Irish", had imigrated in 1875 and was a naturalized citizen.

In the 1920 U.S. Census, the family was living in Aneta, Nelson County, North Dakota on Fourth Street and was listed as a Proprietor in the Livery Stable Industry. He was living with his wife Fanny [age 52], and children Margaret [age 18], Melford [age 15], Dourghty [Dorothy] [age 13], and Melvin [age 9]. He stated to the census taker that he was born in Canada, had imigrated in 1880 and was a naturalized citizen.

Thomas Keyes passed away on 17 October 1921 in Aneta, Nelson County, North Dakota. He is buried in Silent Hill Cemetery in the same city as he died. His second wife Fanny lived another 19 years, passing away in 1940, and she is buried in the same cemetery beside her husband.
