EDUCATION: Sent to a dame's school at Goodshaw. 1809 Not admitted to Ackworth School because of a withered hand. 1814 Sent to uncle's at Sunderland. Attended school at Bishopwearmouth.

OCCUPATION: 1815 - Worked for uncle. 1817 - Became manager of store. Sent to Staindrop to manage a new store inherited by his uncle. This was a very general store, including wines and spirits and a bank agency. 1828 - Bought his own business inHalifax. 1881 - Was described in the census as "retired draper".

RESIDENCES: Bishopwearmouth, Co. Durham, England. Staindrop, Co. Durham, England. 1881 - Census - 13 Akeds Road, Halifax, Yorkshire, England.

DOMESTIC_SERVANTS: (1881 Census) Mary Braithwaite, housekeeper, 55, of Southowram, Yorkshire, England.
