1. The 67th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was formed by the consolidation of two partial regiments (45th from the Cleveland area, and 67th from the Toledo area) in December 1861 under the command of German soldier of fortune Otto Burstenbinder. Burstenbinder soon left under a cloud of controversy as the 67th marched into the Shenandoah Valley to do battle with Stonewall Jackson's army. Fighting successfully at Kernstown on March 23, 1862, the regiment remained in the Valley until ordered to Harrison's Landing, Virginia in June 1862, followed by a move to Suffolk, Virginia in September 1862.

The regiment was transferred to the Department of the South and suffered heavily in the famous assault on Fort Wagner near Charleston in July 1863. The regiment remained in South Carolina until February 1864 when it reenlisted, and the veterans went home on veterans' furlough.

Returning to Washington, D.C. in late March, the 67th was assigned to the Army of the James under "Beast" Ben Butler and took part in a number of bloody battles in and around Petersburg including Chester Station, Ware Bottom Church, Deep Bottom Run, Darbytown Road, and Fair Oaks. Following a quiet winter encampment, the regiment stormed and carried Fort Gregg at Petersburg on April 2, 1865 and pursued Lee's army until its surrender at Appomattox Courthouse, April 9, 1865.

The regiment remained in Virginia on police duty until it was mustered out of service December 7, 1865 at City Point, Virginia.
