BIOGRAPHY: Daniel Rial, the oldest son of Isaac, was born in 1796, in theState of New Jersey, and when the war of 1812 opened was too young toenlist. But "we are the same that our fathers have been," and the soldierspirit of his ancestors was burning with unquenchable fire in the bosomof the child. He volunteered to help build the fortifications at NewYork, and was permitted to assist in that task. He well remembered seeingthe entrance of the British fleet into New York harbor. His mother,worthy of her warrior son and husband, bound up the wounds of theAmerican soldiers. After the war the lad returned to the farm, anddevoted his time to agricultural pursuits. In 1820 he chose a wife in theperson of Susan Allfree, who was born in 1801, in Carroll township,Washington Co., Penn. He settled on a farm in the district known as theDutch settlement, in the same township, and lived there till his death,in 1880, when, in the fullness of a ripe and honored age, he went down tothe grave, esteemed by all who knew him. Eleven children were born tothem, of whom the following are yet living: Allfree H., Isaac T., Susan,Katherine (living in Ohio), Joseph Y. (in Missouri), Daniel E. (inWestmoreland county, Penn.), and James E. (in Nottingham township). Thefather was a devout Christian gentleman. He was a member of the BaptistChurch for over sixty years, and helped to organize one of the firstcongregations of that denomination and build one of the first churches inthe Monongahela Valley. Susan, his wife, was a daughter of John andHettie Foster Allfree. They were among the first settlers along theMonongahela river. They raised a family of nine children eight daughtersand one son. Abraham, the son, moved to Iowa, where he died at the age ofeighty-six years, leaving an influence for good. He was an active workerin the Methodist Church for sixty years, and held an exhorter's licensefor most of that time. He was always able to help the needy, and did muchin the way of benevolence. Susan, the widow of Daniel Rial, who is in herninety-second year, is living with her son, James E. Rial.
