Dan. E. Petro Defaults. Abandons His Trust as Town Clerk and Treasurer And Seeks Relief from Crime in Unknown Lands. The all-absorbing topic of conversation in Cambridge City for a week past is the flight of Dan. E. Petro, the trusted clerk and treasurer of the town corporation – the friend of everybody and everybody his friend. No more popular gentleman ever enjoyed the confidence of this people, and the shock was startling when it was learned that on Monday night, 8th inst., he left town never to return unless compelled to, and that he had embezzled public funds to the amount of approximately $4000. Mr. Petro came here from Lewisville with his parents when a small boy. He was a hustler in his youth whether as a student in school or a groceryman's delivery clerk, he was the same industrious character. By such means as this he became a general favorite and when nine years ago he was taken from a clerkship in Frank Frohanpfel's grocery and elected clerk of the town, the people felt that they had confided their trust in a worthy young man. In his new relation he proved equally agreeable. He was capable and courteous and such was his popularity that he was re-elected several times without opposition. He served as clerk from 1896 to 1899 when the duties of treasurer were reposed to him. At the meeting of the newly elected board in May, 1901, he filed a bond for $20,000, with C.T. Wright, John S. Lackey and James Brooks as securities. His succession to the treasurership proved his undoing. In his custody was a large amount of money, and since it is not always paid out as soon as collected, it was his property in trust for weeks at a time. He began the use of this fund in a private way probably as early as 1902, but that is not fully verified and it will be difficult to connect his bondsmen with any shortage during that period. The retiring board of May, 1902, checked up and proved his accounts and found them correct. They also visited the bank and found the money on deposit. From May, 1902 to the same date in 1904, appears to have been his unworthy harvest. When the present board came into service they did not approve of the financial report of the preceding board and issued a supplemental statement showing an indebtedness of about $4000 more than had been reported. As the time for the annual settlement in May drew close it was apparent to Mr. Petro's friends that he was drinking and had become reckless, but the thought that he was in trouble from using funds that he was not able to replace, was remote as any thought could be. When he failed to meet the finance committee Tuesday, Marshal Ulerich went to his home and made inquiry. His wife said that he had gone away and would not probably return. At least he would not reveal his intended location until after he found it to his liking and then he would send for her and his little daughter. Further than that nothing is known. The board was at once convened and a hurried examination made. This showed a decided shortage, and it was thought best to employ Mr. Hiatt, an expert accountant of the Dickinson Trust Co., of Richmond, to make an examination back to 1890. Another startling feature was the absence of the bonds of both Mr. Ulerich and Mr. Petro. The should have been in the Western Wayne bank, where the funds are kept, but they were not, nor is there any trace of them. There is a certainty of Marshal Ulerich's bond, but there is some doubt if the clerk-treasurer gave any bond for the term beginning in 1903. So strong was the trust in his integrity that his word was frequently taken in the absence of anything more positive. It is not likely that the town will offer a sufficient reward for Mr. Petro's apprehension, for the reason that it is not financially able to do so. Prosecutor Jessup has the matter in hand and will proceed along lines laid down by the laws of the State. The investigation is progressing slowly and next week the Tribune will have the facts and figures in detail.
