Daniel II was 11 years old when his father died. There is a story in the family that at the start of the Civil War, he tried to enlist with the Union forces, but the recruiter, learning that this teenager was the oldest in his family and an orphan, sent the boy back home to help on the farm.

He is listed on the 1869 voter list as being 22 yrs old and in Gilmer Co., (W)VA.

After his first wife, Hannah died, Daniel married again to Susan Norman Belford, a widow. This was a second marriage for both Daniel and Susan in their older years and they had no children together.

The information on Daniel's death certificate was given by his son, Albert Clifton Kimble. He says that his father's father, also named Daniel Kimble, was born in Germany. Albert may have known or thought that the family's background was German but he didn't get his grandfather's birth location correct.
