Daniel C. Johnson

Daniel C. Johnson was a prosperous farmer in Overton County, Tennessee, as both he and his father, Hubbard Johnson, were among individuals who were obliged to pay tax in the first Federal income tax in 1862. The tax was levied on wealthy individuals living in the Union in order to support Union forces--whether or not they favored the Confederacy. Daniel was married twice: first to Catherine H. Glass cock who was born in 1825 and died in 1866. Daniel had no children by either marriage. In 1850 Federal Census, Daniel was head of household in Overton County with wife Catherine H. plus Jane Johnson, age 17, and John L. Yelton, age 12. Jane Johnson was Nancy Jane Johnson (always called Jane as were her descendants named for her), the daughter of Benjamin Johnson and his wife Araine Carter Johnson of Overton. As was the custom at the time, Daniel and Catherine had other children living with them to help out in the house and with boys on the farm. A man calling himself Anonymous contacted me saying he had Jane Johnson as the daughter of Daniel Johnson and his wife Catherine H. Glasscock. He blocks replies and referred to Daniel's memorial on Findagrave--so am replying to Anonymous here that when Jane Johnson was born in 1833, Daniel C. was 14 and Catherine H. Glasscock was age 8. I have a studio portrait of Nancy Jane Johnson, a photo of her home after moving to Mill Creek in Phelps County, MO (which was on the cover of a regional glossy magazine), her handwritten obituary done by one of her grandchildren, and lots of family stories about her from her grandchildren.
