When you become a part of the BC community, you become part of a history that goes all the way back to 1880. That’s when a 26-year-old decided to start the Spring Creek Normal School and Collegiate Institute. Daniel Christian (D.C.) Flory opened the school on Sept. 6, 1880, with six students, including one woman. Bridgewater has always admitted women and was the first private liberal arts college in Virginia to do so.

    Daniel Christian Flory
Birth: 3 Apr 1854 New Hope, Augusta County, Virginia, USA
Death: 9 Nov 1914 (aged 60) Indiana, USA
Burial: Middle River Church of the Brethren Cemetery, New Hope, Augusta County, Virginia, USA
    Memorial #: 58467238
Bio: Funeral services for Rev. Daniel C. Flory, of New Hope, founder and first president of Bridgewater College and a prominent minister of the Church of the Brethren, will be held at Middle River Church in Augusta County this morning at 11 o'clock, Rev. S. N. McCann, of Bridgewater College, will conduct the services.

Mr. Flory was found dying in bed at the home of a friend in Buck Creek, Ind., where he had gone to conduct, a series of evangelistic services. He had retired Sunday night, complaining of feeling tired, and had asked not to be called early on the following morning. Not desiring to disturb him, no one went to his room until 11 o'clock in the forenoon. He was unconscious and died within a short time. A physician said death was due to paralysis.

The body arrived at New Hope yesterday afternoon, accompanied by his daughter, Miss Annie Flory, of Chicago, and Byron Flory, a student at Bridgewater College, who went West on receipt of a telegram announcing his father's death.

Mr. Flory was the founder of Bridgewater College in 1882 and its first president serving in that capacity for a number of years. He was a member of the Board of Trustees at the time of his death, he was always on the alert for anything that would in any way accelerate its progress and never tired in his efforts to make, it an institution of more than local importance and to gain for it a place among the highest educational institutions of the South.

Although Mr. Flory was strictly conservative in many things to his influence and acknowledged ability is due to much of the success and wide reputation of the institution he so faithfully upheld during its struggling years.
