  5.   Daniel Delo, in Find A Grave.

October 25, 1877 - Died in Clarion borough on Friday, October 19, 1877, Daniel Delo, esq., aged 77 years, 10 months and 10 days. The deceased was one of our oldest, best known and most highly esteemed citizens having served as sheriff, Prothonotary, justice of the peace and jury commissioner, besides holding different positions under the State government, on the public works. In every position he occupied and every trust held by him, he discharged his duties intelligently, faithfully and honestly. For many years he was a Sabbath school superintendent and a Ruling Elder in the Presbyterian Church. He was an active worker in the cause of temperance and a leader in every movement for the promotion of religion and morality. About four years ago the friends of Mr. Delo and his wife who still survives him, celebrated their golden wedding.
The funeral of Mr. Delo took place on Sunday last and though it rained and was very disagreeable, yet a large number was present. The sons, son-in-law, and grandsons of the deceased officiated as pall bearers and carried the deceased to the cemetery and deposited the remains in their last resting place. There were five sons and one son-in-law, accompanied by six grandsons, in charge of the casket and many relatives following. The pall bearers were: A. K. Page, Jeremiah Delo, Rev. B. F. Delo, H. L. Delo, S. P. Delo and T. B. Delo, being the son-in-law and sons – and Wm. E. Page, B. F. Page, James Page, D. F. Delo, Wm. C. Delo and J. S. C. Delo, grandchildren. One son resides in Missouri and was not present. An interesting feature of the funeral was the presence of the Sabbath school, over which the departed so long presided. The children came from the church in procession to take a last look at the kindly face of their old and earnest friend. Revs. Halleck and Miller of the M. E. church, and Rev. Snyder of the Baptist church, officiated on the occasion – Rev. Elder, the pastor of the Presbyterian church being absent at Synod. The death of Mr. Delo was not unexpected as he has been gradually failing for some time. But the announcement of his demise created a general feeling of sorrow, as all felt that a good man had gone and a friend had passed away forever. A proper obituary notice containing a sketch of the life of the deceased and some facts and incidents of his long and honorable career will be published next week or as soon as the necessary statistics can be secured.

November 1, 1877 - The subject of this brief memoir was born in Hempfield township, Westmoreland county, Pa., December 9th, 1799. At the age of eight years, he came with his father to Brush Run, then in Armstrong county, within some four miles of the present town of Clarion. A few years subsequently the family lived for a short time at the mouth of Piney, then moved to the west side of the Clarion river, where the subject of this paper came to manhood. Up to this time his educational privileges had been very limited. Having an enquiring mind, he mastered the common branches of an English education by private study. The only lights furnished for evening study being that from lighted pine knots stuck in the chinks of the chimney. When yet under age, he met with an accident which dislocated his shoulder, from which he was lame all his life, it never having been adjusted. This led him to school teaching, when only 18 years of age. He followed this occupation for fifteen years. When nearly sixty years of age he taught one term of school in Clarion borough.
In 1823, he married Christina Laughner, who survives him. To them, 13 children were born, 11 sons and 2 daughters. Two of these died in infancy, one at 10 years and 10 came to manhood. Daniel A. died at 19 years, Joshua H. was killed in the Union army at the battle of Fair Oaks, and Rev. John A., chaplain of the 11th Penn’a Vol., contracted disease in the army and died in 1864. Six sons and a daughter are living, as follows: Geo. W., Jeremiah, Rev. B. F., H. L., S. P. and T. B. Delo and Mrs. A. Page.
Mr. Delo was trusted with official positions by his fellow citizens when but a young man, having served as constable and then as justice of the peace for 15 years, first by appointment and then by election. He served one term as county auditor of Venango county, before the formation of Clarion county. He was elected the second sheriff of Clarion county. In 1852 he received appointments on the State public works, where he remained until those were sold in 1857. For a short time subsequently, he remained in the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company at Johnstown, Pa. After his return to Clarion, he served one term as Prothonotary and one term as justice of the peace. As a politician and office holder he was esteemed by all who knew him as a man worthy of all confidence. In his business transactions he was honest to a fault.
Mr. Delo had his first religious awakenings when but a small boy. Even then he would read to the rest of the children and exhort them to prayer. He became a member of the German Reformed church, May 14, 1825 and for a number of years was treasurer of Clarion classis. During his residence in Hollidaysburg, Pa., in 1855, he transferred his church membership to the Evangelical Lutheran church. After his return to Clarion he transferred his church membership to the Presbyterian church of Clarion. Here, as in former communions, he was an active and official member, occupying the position of ruling elder at the time of and for some years before his decease. Over half a century ago he became interested in Sunday school work, inaugurating at that time a Sunday school in Beaver township. For the greater part of his subsequent life, he occupied the post of Sunday school superintendent. Only about four weeks before his death he finally resigned the position of superintendent of the Infant Sunday School of Clarion. He was always sought by all denominations to speak at Sunday school celebrations in neighboring charges. He was a man of broad Christian charity. His house has been the place of entertainment for ministers of all denominations. His life was a steadfast one in all things pertaining to godliness. In his death he expressed most unshaken confidence in the promises of God. As a shock of corn, fully ripe, he was gathered to the home of God, October 19, 1877, aged 77 years, 10 months and 10 days.
