Daniel CAIN was born in Augusta Co., VA in 1743. This date and location is given to us by a descendant and is considered to be fairly accurate. This info is also in a published family history.

In the "Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in VA" by Lyman Chalkey, there are two references to Daniel CAIN. He represents his father, Nicholas CAIN, when the land in Brock's Gap is processioned in 1755. Daniel CAIN, as a young man at age 17, is added to the tithables in 1760.

After his father's death, Daniel CAIN is the only heir who received any special bequest. He was to inherit his father's wearing clothes. There is some special significance to this bequest.

Legend indicates that Daniel CAIN married Susannah CUSTER about 1765, but no documentary evidence can be found, although several items of circumstantial evidence seem to indicate this.

In 1773, Daniel settled in what is now Harrison Co., WV. His land was located on Lost Creek near his brother, John CAIN, and near the CUSTER's, Richards and Lowther families. Daniel CAIN can be found on the census, tax lists and the tithables there through 1785.

In 1786, Daniel left Harrison Co., WV and went back east to his father's home in Albemarle Co. Whether he took his family with him is unknown but it is unlikely. It is assumed Daniel went to his father's house to be with him during his last days since his father died last Summer of 1787. After settling his fathers affairs, Daniel then was ready to go home. Before he left, he with others signed a petition requesting the government to issue paper money. After the October court term, Daniel was notified in 1788 or 1789 that there was additional inheritance from his father's estate. Daniel, not wanting to make the journey again or was unable to make the journey, gave his son, Arnold, a power of attorney to go back to Albemarle Co. to collect, in his place, the rest of his inheritance.

In August, 1799, Daniel and his wife, Susannah, sold their land in Harrison Co. and left for the Northwest Territory beyond the Ohio River.

Daniel CAIN and his sons are listed in the 1800 census of Washington Co., OH. Whether this indicates a residence there or if this is an absentee landowner's list is not known. Some researchers believe that Daniel later settled in Green Co., OH and married there again. [1]
