Phineas Ball and Martha had Daniel bp. 6 Jun 1742.
Daniel Ball and Lucy Newton had [no son named Daniel]. "Daniel Ball, perhaps the above, m. Lydia Smith, Sept. 18, 1778."
[Note: Ward apparently was not able to make sense of the torn record, or was unaware of it, as he shows no son Daniel for Daniel and Lucy. It is slightly ambiguous which of the above Daniels he meant, presumably the father since it is part of his paragraph, but both are too old to make the age at death.]

Daniel Ball [#201], s/o Phineas Ball [#70], b. 1742, m. Lydia Smith of Worcester. "They resided first in Holden but removed to Marlboro, N.H. in 1785 ...In 1812, they removed to Troy, N.H.."
[Note: Presumably the author is trying to put together Ward's information and assumes he meant the younger of Ward's two choices. Like Ward he is unaware of a son Daniel in the family Daniel Ball [#163] and Lucy Newton, leaving a six year gap in children from 1752 to 1758. It is not clear why he thinks they resided in Holden, and this may likely be a side-effect of the mis-identification since Phineas lived in Holden. No births are recorded there for Daniel and Lydia (or anywhere else so far). The deed in New Hampshire where Daniel bought land in 1784 appears to say he is of "Spinut" in Worcester County, Massachusetts (Cheshire deed Vol. 11, p. 474). That name has not be identified.]

"Daniel Ball came from Holden, Mass., in 1785, and settled in Marlborough; he came to what is now Troy, in 1812; he died Feb. 23, 1830, aged 74; his wife was Lydia Smith of Worcester; she died Oct. 13, 1840, aged 86."
[Note: the only obvious improvement is that this source is informed by the gravestones, so drops the incorrect birthdate, and doesn't attempt to identify Daniel's parents. Yet the origins in Holden remain?]
