Daniel Bagley grew up in Hayfield, Pennsylvania. His parents were from New York, and had moved there a few years before. Their neighbors included Jeremiah and Nancy Whipple, and Daniel married their daughter Susannah in 1840. They moved shortly thereafter to Illinois, where Daniel became a Methodist minister, traveling around Illinois. They were enumerated back in Hayfield in October 1850.

In 1852, Daniel was chosen by his church to go to Oregon, and he and his family traveled with the "Bethel Party," including the Hortons, Shoudys, and Mercers. They arrived in Salem, Oregon in September 1852. Daniel continued to work as a missionary in Oregon for the next 8 years, until his wife's health caused them to seek out better living in the Puget Sound area in late 1860.

They settled near present day downtown Seattle, and Daniel soon became the pastor of the Brown Church at Second and Madison. In addition to leading the church, Bagley was involved in the establishment of the University of Washington. He helped site the school and became president of the university's board of commissioners. During the 1870s, he also ran the Lake Washington Coal Company. Late in life, he returned to life as a preacher in Ballard, Columbia City, Yesler Street, and South Park. He and his wife lived with their only child Clarence, who later became a notable historian of Seattle and Washington.[9]

Daniel Bagley Elementary School in North Seattle is named for Daniel the year following his death.
