In Scott, N. Y., May 29th, 1877, of ulcerated liver, D. Austin Babcock, aged 50 years. He was the oldest son of Daniel and Almira Burdick Babcock; was born, and with the exception of perhaps three years, has always lived in Scott. For two or three years, fears were entertained by friends that his health was being undermined, but it was not until February last that the disease developed itself. Since that time, he has not been able to tend to business, but was confined to his room only two or three weeks. In early life, Bro. Babcock professed faith in Christ, and united with the Church of Scott, of which he has ever been a faithful member. For many years he has been a manufacturer and dealer in tinware, hardware, etc., and in this capacity has won the confidence of the community, of a man of strict integrity and upright character. In the church and society he leaves a large vacancy. His place in the services of the sanctuary was always filled; his voice in the prayer and conference meeting always heard. In the Sabbath school, of which he has been a lifelong member, and for many years a faithful teacher, he felt a deep and abiding interest; and in bearing all the burdens of the church, he was among the foremost. His wife, daughter, and aged parents deeply mourn his departure, but are comforted in the assurance that their loss is his infinite gain. The large congregation at the funeral services at the church attest the esteem in which he was held in the community.
