Facts and Events
He attended the University of Michigan and was later a gentleman farmer on Grosse Island. Before the Civil War about 1854 or 1855, he was accidentally shot in the leg and this caused him problems for the rest of his life. During the Civil War he was a Lt. in the 5th Michigan Cavalry. He later served in the Commissary Department in Washington, District of Columbia, from February 6, 1863 until October 10th when he was discharged for physical reasons (chronic diarrhea and hemorrhaging) at Ft. Leaven worth, Kansas. He returned toMichigan, where he had served as supervisor of Monguagon Township (1856, 1860-1866). He also served as Deputy Postmaster of Detroit. References
