Facts and Events
Address: Address 1: 17349-80th Avenue City: Coopersville State: Michigan Postal code: 49404 Country: USA Phone: 616-837-8463 Phone: 616-837-8463 Dale was my father. He was the prime example of a man speaking softly and carrying a big stick. Much like me, he was a quiet man and didn't say too much. In high school, Dale was on the track team. He held the record in some event for many years. He said that he always came in second place. Finally the coach figures out that he could run faster, but had no desire to. He just paced himself behind the leader. So in practice, the coach decided to put short distance runners in front of him and switch them out to train him for distance running. My dad always told his daughters that it didn't matter what we chose as a career, just do something that you enjoy. He said there's nothing worse than going to work everyday and doing something that you hate. Dale was raised on a farm and his first job off the farm was in the factory. He hated it. He said that he left after his first day and never returned. I think that is why he worked so hard to be able to have the farm support the family, so he could be outside. In 1965, Dale and his brother Randy (Bud) bought the farm at 17349-80th Avenue in Coopersville, Michigan. Our family moved into the house on the farm and Uncle Bud and his family moved into a mobile home while they built a house at the north end of the property. The brothers kept their day jobs (Dale at C&O Railroad and Randy at Brunswick). The wives did chores during the day and the brothers would do the evening chores. On the weekends the kids would help. When Randy divorced his wife in the 1970s, he sold his part of the farm to Dale. Randy wanted say that he bought the farm for less money than he actually did in order to cheat his wife out of her full portion of the farm. Dale refused and the brothers never spoke again. One of the other brothers, Dick, took sides with Randy. As a result, he broke off all relations with Dale too. Randy's wife, Sharon, and son, Scott, remained a part of the family. Random things that I remember about my dad: He walked fast. When helping him outside, I had to almost run to keep up with him. He ate a bowl of ice cream almost every evening. He also liked to eat double fried egg sandwiches with mustard. He never liked to be the center of attention. My dad always liked to be early to church. We would arrive to church an hour early so he could greet everyone when they came to church. References
