County Kerry gotten from the bank records -- or it could be County Clare, as family memories had it -- the two counties are adjacent and so he could have moved from the one of his birth to the other in search of work -- or, it's possible the bank records are from another Cornelius Fitzpatrick

  3.   The surname Fitzpatrick is the translation of Mac Giolla Phádraig from the original Irish to English. It is the only surname with the Fitz prefix of Irish origin. All others are of Norman descent. According to Carrigan, this kingdom was founded by Aengus Osrith who flourished some time about the latter half of the second century of the Christian era. Giolla Phádraigs reign commenced some eight centuries later in 976 AD and he reigned until he was slain in 996 AD. His sons were styled Mac Giolla Phádraig (son of Giolla Phádraig). As part of the colonisation of Ireland by England, natural Irish names had to be restyled in the English format. Mac Giolla Phádraig was anglicised as Fitzpatrick.
  4.   Fitzpatrick. Native Irish, possibly 5 distinct Clans. Estimated 5 founding ancestors. Genetic homeland: Cavan, Laois, Down, Cork and Clare. The Fitzpatricks in Laois were originally called McGilpatrick (a surname that no longer exists)

  5.   possibly he is one of these Cornelius Fitzpatricks from CastleGarden.org -- arrived 2 Sep 1850, ship Andrew Foster, age 20 / arrived 3 Apr 1847 ship Thomas W. 6. No direct proof but it seems likely to be him: Name: Cornelius Fitzpatrick; Age at Enlistment: 21; Enlistment Date: 27 Sep 1861; Rank at enlistment: Private; Enlistment Place: New York City, NY; State Served: New York; Survived the War?: Yes Service Record: Enlisted in Company M, New York 5th Cavalry Regiment on 31 Oct 1861. *On the 24th of June an order was received calling for these volunteers; and although the bitter experience of our two unsuccessful assaults it was feared would prevent any response, yet twenty-four brave boys were found in the One Hundred and Sixteenth who were willing to offer themselves once more for this perilous undertaking. Their names were as follows: Frank Bentley, Isaac Colvin, Philip Linebits, Daniel Covensparrow, Andrew Cook, Charle Fisher, F. Hildebrand, H. Daniels, John M. McComber, Christian Grawi, Francis Oberfill, Frederick Niewardis, James Gallagher, Thomas Maloney, Cornelius Fitzpatrick, Theodore Hansel, Frederick Weber, Samuel Whitemore, Wiliam Martin, Fred Jost, Jacob Zumstein, Henry Favre, Jacob Tschole and Albert D. Prescott. They left us and joined the other volunteers, who were organized into two battalions under the command of Col. Birge, of the Thirteenth Conn. Vols. They remained there until after the surrender of Port Hudson, an occurrence which prevented the necessity of another assault, and doubtless save most of their lives.

Bay, LI, laborer, 1838, County Kerry, arrived 1863 per Edinboro, single, father John, Mother Johanna Moriarty, one sister Julia, one brother John. (It does seem that the John Fitzpatrick in Stamford may well have been his brother, so it is a possibility -- also, an Ann Fitzpatrick opened an account at the same bank in 1866.)

NOTE: The only problem is that the latter date at least is after the birth of "our" Cornelius' first child, who was supposedly born in Connecticut. Perhaps there was a branch in Stamford? Perhaps they continued to bank in New York even after leaving the state - or perhaps the census information that said all the children were born in Connecticut was wrong. Or perhaps Cornelius worked with his boss in New York as well as at his home in Connecticut - Name: Cornelius Fitzpatrick, Location: Cork, Buttevant, Ballybeg

  8. The census taker had put the name down as Carneus, probably reflecting the accent of whomever he had spoken to. Also, the last name was put into two parts - Carneus Fitz Patrick [Cornelius Fitzpatrick] Birth Year: abt 1840 Age in 1870: 30 Birthplace: Ireland Home in 1870: Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut Race: White Gender: Male Household Members: Carneus Fitzpatrick 30, Ann Fitzpatrick 27, Magie Fitzpatrick 5, John Fitzpatrick 4, Thomas Fitzpatrick 1
  9. 9.0 9.1 census
  10. Cornelius was listed in the census as a coachman and his family lived in a separate house listed immediately after Oliver Hoyt's. Hoyt's house was described in other sources as being on Noroton Hill.

  12. According to 1800 census, may not have been able to read or write. Definitely seemed to get a hash mark for not writing.
  13. according to census but, it is interesting that in the 1880 census, Oliver had no coachman listed at or near his residence - is it possible that Cornelius still worked for him but moved to an off-site residence? Also, not sure how much weight we should give to the occupation designation since Oliver Hoyt (the wealthy leathergoods merchant) was designated as a "tanner" However the Stamford Directory 81-82 also lists Cornelius as laborer
  14. Stamford Borough Directory -- only Fitzpatrick in the book that year
  15. Stamford Advocate (Published as STAMFORD ADVOCATE) - March 31, 1882, p 1
NOTE: No explanation for the asterisk in the second mention
  16. Stamford Directory -- That was the occupation of the only Cornelius Fitzpatrick in the 1883-4 but given the other occupations, I'd guess it would have been something more like hearse driver.
  17. Stamford Directory -- other Fitzpatricks listed for that year were Mrs Martin (11 E. Meadow), John, Laborer (23 E. Meadow), Michael, mechanic (45 Meadow) Patrick, laborer (Willis Ave)
  18. 18.0 18.1 18.2 Stamford Directory
  19. Cornelius Fitzpatrick, watchman at White, Gillespie & Thayers, was appointed a special constable. - Stamford Advocate - July 1, 1887, p 3
  20. He most likely moved into the city with the wife or sons of Oliver Hoyt as their coachman after the death of Oliver (Oliver Hoyt died after a carriage accident on May 4, 1887, according to a New York Times article (full article on New York Times site) He was taking a drive with his wife in Greenwich when, while coming down Put's Hill, an accident to the harness caused the horse to run away. He was thrown from the carriage and had injury to his collarbone, back and internal injuries. His wife had only injuries to her wrist (sounds to me like she stopped the carriage!)) May 6, 1887, Wednesday NOTE: Afterwards the business moved into NYC, Cornelius may have accompanied the family as a driver -- in fact, he may have originally worked for the family in NYC and moved to Stamford as part of his job.
  21. NOTE: There is no concrete proof yet that this is "our" Cornelius, but the facts do seem to fit. We know that many members of the family moved to NYC (including Cornelius Jr.) and the dates all work, so it is being taken as a reasonable assumption at this point that Ann Coughlin died within a year or so of the 1880 census and that Cornelius could have remarried four or so years later, allowing for him to be married in this census for 16 years. Also, he was naturalized, which makes "American" a match -- the birthdate/age are off by a decade though, so it's iffy1900 Census info Cornelius Fitzpatrick Home in 1900: Manhattan, New York, New York Age: 50 Birth Date: Jan 1850 Birthplace: Ireland Race: White Ethnicity: American Gender: Male Immigration Year: 1863 Relationship to head-of-house: Uncle Father's Birthplace: Ireland Mother's Birthplace: Ireland Marriage Year: 1884 Marital Status: Married Years Married: 16 Residence : New York City, New York, New York Occupation: Day Laborer, months not employed 6 Household Members: Maggie Gallaggher 34; Daniel Gallaggher 9; Cornelus Fitzpatrick 50; Hugh Shairks 32; John Cosgrove 30; Jennie Murphy 17 I believe this address went with the above record: 200 62nd St, Brooklyn, NY
  22. judging from the census, and this is assuming that this is the correct Cornelius.
  23. Home for the Aged (located at 745 Classon Avenue, Brooklyn) Again, there is no proof as of yet that this is the correct Cornelius, other than that the dates and locations generally work 1910 US Federal Census had a Cornelius as an inmate of the New York Home for the Aged and Infirm, Brooklyn NY Name: Cornelius Fitzpatrick Age in 1910: 74 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1836 Birthplace: Ireland Relation to Head of House: Inmate Father's Birth Place: Ireland Mother's Birth Place: Ireland Home in 1910: Brooklyn Ward 29, Kings, New York Marital Status: Widowed Race: White
