When Gus Zaharako immigrated from Greece his name was changed on the certificate. The original spelling was Zacharako.

Per research done by Ann Knoblock: The Olympia Dairy firm had its beginning in 1915 when Gust M. Zharako started selling milk to a few customers from his home as a sideline whiled employed by his uncles - James, Louis, and Peter Zaharako - at Zaharako Brothers Confectionary on Washington Street in Columbus Indiana. The Zaharako family had come to the United States from Sparta Greece before the turn of the twentieth century. The name of the dairy business referred to Mount Olympus, mythological home of the gods of ancient Greece. Gust began working at the confectionery in 1907 and began delivering milk in 1916. By 1918 the dairy business expanded rapidly after Zaharako purchased a farm, dairy herd, horse, wagon, and milk route from Dr. J. A. Banker and his son-in-law, William White.

In 1918 Zaharako built a dairy plant with pasteurization equipment at 718 Pearl Street. In 1940 his two sons, George and Charles, became his partners (Another son, Manuel, was fatally burned in an explosion at the dairy in 1936). Roy A. Trisler, Gust's brother-in-law, was also associated with the dairy. Improvements were made in 1946, and a dairy bar and lunchroom were added in 1947. The Olympia became a popular spot for students of nearby Columbus High School, later Central Junior High. The firm stopped processing milk in 1955, becoming distributors for Maplehurst Dairy Products of Indianapolis. Gust died in 1969 and Charlies in 1974. George and his nephew, Charles continued the business. Home deliveries ceased in 1967, and wholesale deliveries around 1972. The business on Pearl Street was closed in July of 1984 when a new Olympia dairy/bar restaurant was opened at the northwest corner of Home Avenue and 25th Street. This was across the street from Columbus North High School.The olympia dairy firm had it's begging in 1915 when gust m. Zaharako started selling milk to a few custermurs from his home as a sideline while employed by his uncles-James, Louis, and Peter Zahako brothers Confectionery on Washinton Street.
