Notes for CONRAD SCHWARTZLANDER: Conrad was the first Swartzlander to be born in the New World. He died in the home of his son George. Conrad married about 1777 in Bucks County, but the surname of his wife is unknown. He was not listed in the 1779 four million State Tax of Bucks County, but Conrad was assessed numerous times for taxes. In 1781 he was assessed with two head of cattle of Warwick township, Bucks County. In 1782 he was assessed with 1 cow. Conrad was assessed in the Bucks County Funding Tax drawn from township assossors and associates Freeholders tax books for the year 1875 in New Britain Township with 24 acres, 1 horse, and 1 cow. The previous year, six white inhabitants were listed in his Bucks County household. He paid 3 pound 10 in the funding tax of 1786 in New Britain Township. He also paid 1.6 Pounds in taxes in New Britain Township and the tax of 1787 shows he paid 3.1 Pounds in Hilltown Township, Bucks County. Conrad was a Private in the Sixth Class with the 3rd Company, 3rd Battalion of Bucks County Militia under the command of Lt. Col. William Roberts, this according to a June 16, 1780 class roll. A muster roll of Captain Henry Darrack's Company, Bucks County Militia of September 21, 1778 also lists Conrad Swartzlander. He was enrolled as a Private in Capt. Darracks 7th Company, 4th Battalion according to an Appeal Book dated January 12, 1778. By June 12, 1780, a class roll of Capt. Darracks 3rd Company, 4th Battalion for the Bucks County Militia lists him as a private in the 6th Class. Conrad, his wife and family moved to Centre Township, Union County between 1800-1810. They also lived for a time in Limestone Township, Union County Pennsylvania. NOTE: The name of Union County was changed to Snyder County in honor of Simon Snyder, the first Pennsylvania Governor of German Descent. The name Snyder is the Americanized for of the common German Surname "Schneider" meaning tailor. |
