    CALKINS – Commerce John Calkins of Route 3, Box 108, Springfield, passed away April 5, 1970 at a local hospital. He was born April 21, 1894 at Sauk Centre, Minnesota. He was married to Mary Matthews December 4, 1918 at Steele, North Dakota. He had been a resident of this community since 1947. A member of the Mohawk Community Church; Mohawk McKenzie Grange; Springfield Gideons. Survived by wife, Mary; 1 son, Robert of Seattle, Washington; 1 daughter, Lois Solberg of Bismarck, North Dakota; 6 grandchildren; 2 brothers: Percy Calkins of Otis, and Lester Calkins of Sauk Centre, Minnesota; 3 sisters: Mrs. Grace Golden of Salem, Mrs. Mildred McIntyre of Eugene, Mrs. Gladys Larson of Portland. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 8th at 2 p.m. in the MOHAWK COMMUNITY CHURCH. Reverend Vernon Wiggers officiating. Interment Valley View Cemetery. Due to the family's request, the casket will remain closed after the service. Visitation hours for Mr. Calkins will be this evening from 6 to 9 p.m.; all day Tuesday. Those who wish may make donations to the Gideons. Buell Chapel in charge.
