Facts and Events
His full name was Clyde Macaulay Davenport. His father, Samuel Davenport, was an avid reader of English literature, and named Clyde after the English essayist Thomas Macaulay (1800-1859). Clyde, as his children attested, was never quite certain of how to spell his middle name. He used McCalley, McCaulley, MacCaulley, etc. at different times. Born in 1904, he did not have a birth certificate to consult. When he went to apply for Social Security in 1966, he had to have a birth certificate created by affidavit, and he spelled his name Clyde McCaulley Davenport. The true spelling is verified in an old family bible owned by his mother, then passed down to his sister Nell Davenport Headrick, then to her daughter Naomi Headrick Haynes, who had it in 2000.
