The Hutchinson News, October 05, 2006: (http://www.hutchnews.com/news/local/stories/Trust100406.shtml) Reno Co. Youth Services, others benefit from division of trust By Mary Clarkin

Husband and wife C.R. and Salena Tullis did not have children during their 61 years of married life in Hutchinson.

But interest income from their savings once paid for roller blades, helmets and kneepads for children at the Bob Johnson Youth Shelter here.

Another year, the C.R. Tullis and Salena Tullis Revocable Trust financed a big-screen television for the shelter. The following year, a related surround-sound system was installed.

Tullis money also paid for a popcorn machine and an ice cream machine.

The annual check arrived during the Christmas season, and the directive, said Reno County Youth Services Director Bill Hermes, was to spend it on something out of the ordinary for the children - not for staff salaries or supplies.

The death of Tullis trustee William Mitchell led to the recent decision to disperse the trust, containing approximately $82,000, among the trust's four beneficiaries.

Low interest rates, the avoidance of annual trust-related administrative fees and the fact that C.R. "Cy" Tullis' trust agreement allowed for a final lump-sum distribution also led to the decision.

Using the percentages by which Tullis interest income has regularly been divvied, the distribution will provide $27,871.48 each to Reno County Youth Services and Hutchinson Public Library; $13,895.34 for Hutchinson Hospital Foundation; and $11,148.59 for First Christian Church of Hutchinson.

Hermes told county commissioners Monday that he wants to invest most of the county's share and continue the tradition of using the investment income annually for a special purchase for the youths.

Hermes proposed one caveat, though, to allow for the expenditure of probably less than $2,000 for outside benches at the shelter.

Like some other items purchased by Tullis funds, the benches will bear an engraving that notes the source of the donation.

Cy Tullis began working for The News in 1921. He rose to press foreman and retired in 1968. Salena "Sally" Tullis worked at the former Anthony's store in downtown Hutchinson.

"They both liked children, but when they were younger, they didn't think they could afford children. And when they got a little older and wanted children, they were told by the adoption agencies they were too old," said niece Marilyn Rousey, Hutchinson.

Rousey said her uncle learned money management tips from the late J.P. Harris, publisher at The News, and Tullis tried to pass the knowledge on to their nieces and nephews.

" 'Now, you take the top 10 percent and that goes in your savings. You don't touch that, and it will grow for you,' " Rousey recalled.

Salena Tullis died in 1986 at age 79, and her husband died the next year at age 82.
