Facts and Events
During the Depression, he worked at various jobs eg. on road crew for W.P.A., on auto bodies; brick layer, carpenter. Tried to join Navy during WW11 but was turned down because of his colour blindness. Attended Merchant Marine college in Long Beach CA. Had accident with sparks from welding torch and which resulted in a stay in hospital in Seattle, Washington. He then returned to Kansas City, Mi to collect his wife and moved to Oregon. They built a house there ten moved back to Kansas City. However, they decided they preferred Oregon and in 1950 moved back there, buying a house on 27th Ave, Milwaukie. Clarence worked for Ross Island Shipping, then at the Chevron Oil Plant on Front Ave in Portland until the early 1970's when he suffered a heart attack at home and was forced to retire. He was a Freemason for over 30 years, belonging to the lodge in Kansas City, not in Milwaukie. |
