Clarence was born on the fam- ily farm in San Luis Obispo County to John M. Olive and his wife, Mary C. Machado. He grew up in

San Luis, Salinas, and Modesto, grad- uating from Modesto High School in 1928, Modesto Junior College in 1930, and UC

Berkeley in 1933. He married Catherine Croker in 1934 and in 1937 he was assigned to Merced as an agent of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. He re- tired from Met Life in 1968 and be- came a substitute teacher in the Merced County schools for the next 17 years. He joined the Host Lions Club in 1940, Yosemite Lodge #99 F&AM in 1946, Horni- tos Masonic Lodge #98 in 1985 and the Methodist Church in 1948. He continued to be active in all four right up to his death. Over many years he was very active in community organizations, holding leadership positions in the Life Un- derwriters Assn., Eastern Star, Camp Fire Girls, Job's Daughters, Rainbow Girls, Camera Club, Symphony League, AARP, and the Mobile Homeowner's Assn. He served as Chair of the 1960 Grand Jury, ran the Lions Club speech contest for more than 25 years, and conducted hundreds of Ma- sonic funerals.

His family was always his pri- mary focus; he was married to Catherine for 51 years until her death in 1985. He married Enid Clarke Cartwright in 1986.

He is survived by his wife, Enid and two daughters and their husbands; Wini and Lowell Shifley of Reno and Mary and Michael Herzog of Napa. Three grand- daughters and three step-grand- sons; Lisa Christensen, Suzy O'Brien, Patty Profitt, Steven, Da- vid, and Peter Herzog. Seven great-grandchildren: Molly & Les- ley Christensen, Andrew, Emily, & Will Profitt, Tim & Mike Herzog. Four nieces and nephews; Judy Quattrin, Stanley, Ellsworth, Ralph, & John Olive. He was prede- ceased by three brothers; Arthur, John, & Raymond Olive.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 4, at 2 pm at the Merced United Methodist Church, 899 Yosemite Park Way, with the Yosemite Lodge #99 F & A.M. and Pastor Andrew, & Char- lotte Bear officiating. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, me- morial gifts to the United Methodist Church would be appreciated.
