▼Facts and Events
According to Jody Dillard: Matt was a veteran of World War I. He moved to Waco, from Lueders,Texas in 1921 where he lived until his death. He was the first in the family to get interested in the genealogy of the Dillard's. By tediously researching the libraries and cemeteries he was able to leave a written history of his family. His brother Robert also aided in the search and maintained records of the resting places of many of our kin. Matt was a Baptist. (Article printed in the Bell County Newspaper in 1917) "Called For Examination"....... The local exemption board is busy today sending out notices to the following, notifying them to report to City Hall at 9 o'clock, Tuesday, October 16th for examination. ...on that list was the name Clarence M. Dilliard, Belton. Remembrances from nephew, Neal Barron: Matt's sister Katie used to tell the story about Matt's encounter with a bull that taught him the true meaning of the phrase... 'full of bull'. Matt was trying to load a short-horned bull into a trailer at Katie and Guy's farm. Guy had the rope thru the front end of the trailer but the bull wouldn't step up into the trailer. Matt always wore coverall while working around the Lorena farm. Matt put his shoulder under the bull's rump and was going to force the animal up into the trailer with one big lunge and Guy was instructed to pull hard when Matt hollered. Matt didn't realize that the bull was full of fresh, green, spring grass. As Matt lunged forward, his coverall collar was gapping open and the bull let loose and dumped about five gallons of that recycled grass right down Matt's collar! Katie and Guy laughed so hard that, embarrassed and smelly, Matthew left the bull tied to the trailer and got into his car and went on home to his farm to get cleaned up. Matt never, ever mentioned that incident around us again. (and that is probably why he kept his shirt collar buttoned to the top after that!) Matt was a farmer, later owned and managed apartment buildings in Waco, TX. ▼References
