One of seven redheaded daughters, Clara made the trip across the ocean to the United States with all her sisters, from little girls to late teens, and their mother, probably a widow and also red-haired, not once, but twice! The first time, when asked by an immigration official if she had any money, the mother, afraid she would be robbed, said no. They were all sent back across the sea. They spent an undetermined amount of time in a European port until the mother said, "We're going back." The girls said, "But Mama, they threw us out!" The mother said, "They'll never remember" but when they arrived, the officials said, "You again!" This time the mother admitted to having money and they were admitted to the U.S. [From the stories of Morton Elkind whose uncle Willie married Clara] Clara became a naturalized citizen.
