Clara J. Sheppard, age 85, 1507 Bell Ridge Road, Apt. E29, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2003, at the Johnson City Medical Center. She was a Harlan, Ky., native who had lived in Johnson City for 60 years. She was a daughter of the late Frank and Harriett Emiline Sulphurage Nelson. Mrs. Sheppard was retired from employment with the Salvation Army. She was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Sheppard was preceded in death by: her husband, George W. Sheppard; two brothers, David and Herbert Nelson; and sister, Marie Taylor.

Survivors include: two sons, James Willis Perkins, Johnson City, and Lonnie Bill Hopson, Greenville, S.C.; two stepsons, Voyd and Lloyd Hopson, both of Johnson City; two daughters, Lena Bell Martin and Lucy Fletcher, both of Johnson City; stepdaughter, Barbara Stines, San Antonio, Texas; sister, Francis Scarbrough, of Johnson City; 27 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Morris-Baker. The funeral service will follow at 8 p.m. in the North Chapel with Rev. James Taylor officiating. Pallbearers will be John Mosier, Tiny Mosier, Derick Hopson, Timothy Hopson, Eddie Perkins and Charles Mosier.

Family and friends are asked to meet at Morris-Baker by 9:30 a.m. Thursday to go in procession to Roselawn Memory Gardens for the 10 a.m. committal service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Faith Freewill Baptist Church, 824 N. State of Franklin Road, Johnson City, TN 37604.
