Notes for CHRISTOPHER RINTELMAN: Lived in an area near Hanover where his family had lived for over three hundred years. Rubtekb us ib ge Weser River just up a ways from Hamlin, the town where fable say the Pied Piper led the rats away and saved the children.

When they decided to sail to America, the father went to the market to buy food for the long journey - potatos, onions, hard tack, etc. The captain of the ship was to supply fresh water and additional rations from the ship's store - for a price, of course.

They said good-by to their beautiful homeland, got on a barge, and went down the Weser River, paying tolls as they passed through the lands of the different noblemen. In spite of the high tolls and the delays caused by the frequent stops, they finally reached Bremen where they could board a ship to go to the bustling old city of Hanover. There they boarded an English ship and started their journey to America.

When they landed in Philadelphia in 1754, the captain of the ship told Mr. Rintleman that he owed money for the passage and that he wanted to sell him as a slave until he could get enought money to pay for the passage. Grandfather Rintleman said, "I have five cents in my pocket. This will buy a pick handle to brain anyone who tries to separate me from my family."

A German merchant came to his aid, paid the money, and gave Christopher work where he could keep his family with him. since he was a silk weaver by trade, the money was soon paid back and the little family were ready to travel to North Carolina.

There in Salisbury, Rowan Cty, North Carolina, Christopher and Dorthea established their new home.
