On this 4th day of October 1852 personally appeared in Open Court, before the Court of Green County now sitting, Jane Cooper aged eighty five years, a resident citizen of the county and state aforesaid, who being duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath make the following declaration (supplementary to a former declaration now on file) in order to obtain the benifit of the provision made by acts of Congress, passed on the 7th day of June 1832, and subsequent acts, for the benifit of widows of Revolutionary Officers and Soldiers –
That she is the widow of Christopher Cooper who was an orderly or first Sergent in the Army of the Revolution from the County of Bottetourt and State of Virginia, and served (as she was informed by her husband in his life time) during the last five years of the war of the Revolution, and was at the taking Cornwallis at the seige of Yorktown on the [blank] day of [blank] in the state of Virginia. She further declares that she has no documentary evidence of the services of the said Cooper, but having made application to the Auditor of the state of Va. for that purpose, which will be produced if to be found in that office. She has often heared her husband say that he was always a volunteer or substitute, that he never enlisted or was drafted, but being a young man was, always ready to serve whenever there was a call for men, either as a volunteer or substitute, have heard him speak of Col Russell, Captains Lewis, Gilmer, Crocket, Wallace, Cartmell and Paxten [see endnote], and perhaps others which she does not remember, all of which she offers, as traditionary evidence as handed down to her by said Cooper in his life time, does not now remember the Officers of different services performed by him, and further she knows not of the service She further declares that she was married to the said Cooper on the 20th day of November one thousand seven hundred and eighty six in the County of Bottetout & State of Virginia and have had diligent search made of records of said County for record evidence of her marriage and failed to obtain the same, and must depend upon general reputation to establish that fact for want of Record evidence, and that she has remained the widow of the said Christopher Cooper ever since that period, which will more fully appear from the proof annexed She further declares that the said Cooper departed this life on the 29th day of May 1830 at the age of seventy six years.
