  2. ↑ «i»Meaning of surname unknown - possibly 'smid'. Stamvader is Ignatuis Ferreira of Lisbon in Portugal. Born in about 1696. Came to Southern Africa on the ship Chandos. Ship stranded in a heavy storm on the Table Mountain beach on the night of 16 or 17 June 1722. Stayed on in the Cape and served as a soldier for the VOC. Later he received the farm 'De Hartebeest Kuyl' accross the Gourits river as a 'leenplaas'.

    Married on 6 November 1735 in Stellenbosch with Maria Terblanche. The couple had twelve children.

    He died on 24 May 1772 'over de berg'.«/i»
